BEHIND THE BURLESQUE BOOM: LOLITA VA VOOM

My performances are 100 percent controlled by me, which is something I love about burlesque compared to classical dance – there aren’t rules, you can do and not do as much as you like. I control how much the audience sees and when they see it.

THE WEIMAR REPUBLIC IS BACK IN VOGUE

“Every year we attract bigger crowds and get to be in bigger venues,” says Lolita Va Voom, one of the event’s organizers. “Part of the reason is the popularity of cabaret, which has been rising pretty steadily in Berlin for the past years, and part of it has to do with the rising [interest in] the Weimar era.”

Die jüdisch-amerikanische Burlesque-Tänzerin Lolita Va Voom tauschte ihre Spitzenschuhe nach 15 Jahren klassischem Tanz gegen Pasties ein – herausgekommen ist ihr jüdisch-queeres Kabarett „Jews Jews Jews!“ mit Elementen aus Drag, Burlesque, Stand-up-Comedy, Zauberei und Musik. Die Show feiert jüdische Feiertage und Traditionen auf neue und alte Weise und bringt den Zuschauer*innen lustige und einzigartige Aspekte der jüdischen Erfahrung näher.

“Berlin has such a rich and interesting Jewish history,” she said. “I wanted to do something to represent subversive Jewish art here in Berlin and show people that there are living, breathing, creating Jews here in Berlin and we’re not just some mythical fantasy or only Israeli or Orthodox."

Lolita Va Voom stood up to her namesake, entering the stage with the seduction and prowess of a confident lioness. She devoured us with her slow tease removing her leather costume.

A SCORCHING EVENING OF SUMMER BURLESQUE AT SUNDAY SOIREE

The disco track started slowly allowing the more sensual side of the 70s to be shown by Va Voom, she writhed and danced with her boa as though it was Travolta himself.
